Parkour is much more than just a sport; it’s a comprehensive discipline.
Even the definition of ‘art of movement’ (art du deplacement in French, a term coined by the original group of Yamakasi), without proper contextualization, is not able to define it
The most well-known aspect of this discipline is undoubtedly the spectacular performances of the practitioners, which have found fertile ground in the media, enabling its widespread dissemination worldwide.
However, it’s unfortunate that the average person often stops at this aspect, without informing themselves and delving further into the issue, causing the disappearance of the entire philosophical and values aspect of the discipline from the common imagination.
Parkour, also known as freerunning (a term coined by Sebastian Foucan), is first and foremost an attitude, a way of approaching obstacles, the city, life, and the world. In this respect, it presents a truly curious affinity with philosophy: the latter arises from the questioning of the obvious, the known, from the questioning of customs, in order to discover the truth, or what lies behind appearances, whose understanding allows one to lead a happy and just life.
